WHAT DOES SCARE YOU?

What can be considered really spooky today? Honestly, since I was 10 years old, it no longer frightens me to see the monster (badly done) comes out of the basement, monsters that walk on the ceiling, or dirty dressed maniacs running towards you with a chainsaw. We have been desensitized to a certain type of horror imagery. Don’t get me wrong, Jason and Freddy always keep their charm, but what terrifies us today is all that is hidden in the shadows, that is not shown but it suggests and it echoes our innermost fears.

The fake documentary horror had a lot of charm on its debut, with “The Blair Witch Project”. It was precisely the fear of what you could not see, the story told with a journalistic slant, which made these films very fascinating. But the popularity of the so-called “found footage” genre it has lapsed very quickly due to its abuse, so much so that it has become a parody of itself.

The best contemporary horror films we have lately watched with interest, are often the work of independent Filmmakers,
or they are positioned on a thin line between the paranolmal horror and the thriller.

If you want some inspiration to get into the mood, or just give a gift to a friend who loves horror movies,or spend Halloween night lounging on the couch, you might like this list.

HAUNTING PLACES

One of the things that attracts me the most and really scares me, is to think of spending the night alone in a haunted place. Souls suspended between life and death that claim what was brutally taken away: this is disturbing!
Finding a perfect place for your Halloween shooting is not very difficult, an abandoned house, a foggy forest, a cemetery. These are definitely clichés, but they drag an imaginary that works.

Looking for some inspiration, I came across the most terrifying places in the world, maybe some of them are right next to you!

1. THE HILL OF CROSSESLithuania
The exact origins of Lithuania’s Kryžių Kalnas, or the Hill of Crosses, remain a mystery. Just outside the northern city of Šiauliai, thousands of metal and wooden crosses fully cover a Hill.

2. ISLAND OF DOLLS  Mexico
Dolls in various stages of deterioration hang on trees across this island in Mexico’s Lake Xochimilco.

3. LIZZIE BORDEN HOUSE – United States
In August of 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden were found murdered at this house in Massachusetts. Their daughter Lizzie was considered the prime suspect. The site is now a bed & breakfast, in which guests may choose to sleep in the same rooms where the Bordens took their final breaths.

4. AOKIGAHARA FOREST – Japan
This forest on hardened lava became known in recent years as “the suicide forest.” Japanese spiritualists believe that the suicides committed in the forest have permeated Aokigahara’s trees, generating paranormal activity and preventing many who enter from escaping the forest’s depths.

5. CAPUCHIN CATACOMB – Italy
Mummies of more than 2,000 individuals lie within the catacombs of this Sicilian monastery in Palermo. The conservation status of the corpses exposed make the cemetery of the Convent of the Capuchin Friars one of the most impressive places to visit in the world.

Identifying and choosing the right place for the Halloween shooting is a great advantage for us. A forest or an old house is just around the corner, but there are some tricks that can make a place truly spooky. Keep reading 4 Spooky Tips for Halloween shooting session.

USE PROPS

It is not difficult to make the environment suitable for our halloween shooting session, just surround yourself with some interesting element and take good care of the lighting. Even an empty room can turn into a place of terror.

1. FOG MACHINE

Just add a bit of fog to a darkened room and everything will take on a mysterious and disturbing appearance.

2. SMOKE BOMB

A wood at dusk and a purple smoke bomb is the perfect scanario for a witch ritual

3. BLACK CANDLES

I always have a supply of long black candles at home, they are great for recreating a soft and intriguing lighting.

4. CANDELSTICK

Let your models hold the candelstick for an even more spooky look.

5. PUMKINS

Buy pumpkins, every forms and shapes, you can empty and carve them, and use them as lighting. You can paint them in white or black, or give a glamorous look by coloring them with gold. Use the pulp to make pumpkin muffins with almonds (my favorites here).
